A quadruped AI pet

Meet Echo E1.
It walks, sees
& talks back.

A tiny four-legged robot with a real-time brain, onboard vision, and a natural voice — built from scratch on commodity hardware.

What Echo does

A companion, not a gadget

Echo was built to feel alive — to move, notice you, and talk with you, all running on its own little body.

🐾

Flexible motion

Walks, runs, and dances on four legs with a Stanford-Pupper-inspired gait.

🗣️

Voice interaction

Understands natural language and talks back in a warm, natural voice.

👁️

Robust vision

Recognizes objects and faces with an onboard camera, and follows you around.

Real-time brain

ARTOS, a custom almost-real-time OS, keeps body and mind in sync.

Under the hood

How Echo works

No black boxes. Every part is off-the-shelf and hackable — here's the whole stack.

🧠 Brain
Raspberry Pi running ARTOS, a custom almost-real-time OS (Python) that drives both body and mind.
🦿 Motion
8 servos (two per leg) — MG996R high-torque + MG90S joints — driven over I²C by a PCA9685 controller. Gait inspired by Stanford Pupper.
👁️ Vision
Raspberry Pi Camera via picamera2 / libcamera — object & face recognition, follow-me.
🔊 Voice
Waveshare WM8960 audio codec (I²S) · OpenAI for the conversational brain · Deepgram for natural text-to-speech.
🖨️ Body
Designed in Fusion 360, 3D-printed on an Anycubic Kobra — a custom skeleton tuned to the servos.
📱 Companions
An Echo Cloud web app and a mobile app to name, command, and monitor your Echo.
Behind the scenes

How it's built

Echo went from a Fusion 360 sketch to a walking robot on a desk — one printed part at a time.

3D-printed leg and joint parts for Echo

Design

Every joint, thigh, and support modeled in Fusion 360, sized to hug MG996R and MG90S servos exactly.

Print

Skeleton printed on an Anycubic Kobra — iterating tolerances until the servos slid in snug.

Wire

Eight servos bundled into a PCA9685 driver; camera, mic, and speaker onto the Pi.

Bring it to life

ARTOS calibrates each servo, runs the gait, and wires vision + voice into one loop.
